What is Pre-composition?
A pre-composition (pre-comp) is a composition nested inside another composition, functioning as a single layer in the parent while containing its own internal timeline and layers. Pre-comps are fundamental to professional After Effects workflows, enabling organization of complex projects, creation of reusable elements, and management of hierarchical animation structures.
Think of pre-comps like folders that contain animation—they package multiple layers and their timing into a single manageable unit. This organizational structure transforms chaotic timelines with hundreds of layers into clean, comprehensible hierarchies. A production might nest character animations inside pre-comps, those inside scene pre-comps, and scenes inside a master composition, creating clear structure that is easy to navigate and adjust.
Beyond organization, pre-comps enable crucial technical workflows: effects applied to a pre-comp affect all internal layers as a group, transforms applied to the pre-comp move all contents together while preserving internal animation, and multiple instances of the same pre-comp can appear in projects while sharing the source—edit the pre-comp once and all instances update.
How Does Pre-composition Work?
Pre-comps are created by selecting layers in the timeline and choosing Layer > Pre-compose (Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+C). This creates a new composition containing the selected layers and replaces them in the original timeline with a single layer referencing the new composition. The "Move all attributes" option transfers effects and keyframes from the original layers to the pre-comp layer. Pre-comps appear in the Project panel as compositions and can be opened for editing by double-clicking. Changes made inside pre-comps immediately affect how they appear wherever they are used.
